When school lets out for the summer, so does access to a regular breakfast and lunch for many children and teens. The Summer Food Service Program tackles this issue by providing support to meal sites where students can receive free, nutritious meals during the summer months when school is not in session. 250,000 youth can worry less this summer thanks to our partners at the Florida Department of Agriculture.
When children face hunger, they can’t concentrate, they perform worse in school, they are susceptible to illness and chronic disease, and they often are at risk for hindered cognitive development. By providing meals to these children throughout the summer, we minimize the negative side effects associated with a poor diet.
