80 days of summer should be 80 days of fun, but for the 250,000 hungry children in the Tampa Bay area, those 80 days are a much harsher reality. Instead, these days are filled with hunger and hopelessness.
To these kids, school means more than an education – it provides many or all of the meals they eat during the week. Thousands upon thousands of children receive free or reduced lunches during the school year, but this food disappears during the summer when school is not in session.
Every day that we allow the children in our community to go hungry is another day closer to bad health, obesity, mental illnesses and development issues.
This summer, team up with us to fight child hunger. Here’s how you can help:
—Donate just $5, and you can provide a child with 35 meals. With a donation of $34.29, you can sponsor a child for the entire summer! That’s enough to provide one child with 3 meals a day, every day of summer.
–Host a kid-friendly food drive. Items like canned goods with pop-tops (canned soups, canned spaghetti, canned tuna, canned fruits), microwavable meals (like mac n’ cheese), cereal, oatmeal, granola bars, shelf-stable juice boxes, crackers, fruit cups, applesauce, dried fruit snacks, and peanut butter and jelly
–Check out the Give & Grub food truck, a project by the Laser Spine Institute. You can find the truck at Lightning games or around town, and proceeds go to help fight child hunger! You can also request the truck for an upcoming event.
–Spread the word on social media. Using the #LetKidsBeKids hashtag, share your favorite kids meals, summer activities or even #TBT photos from your own childhood. And be sure to tag Feeding America Tampa Bay!
Help us eliminate these kids’ worry for food. Get involved in making sure no child in Tampa Bay goes hungry.
