As new developments of COVID-19 (coronavirus) continue to arise, we want to continue to provide support and information for you and your organization as we navigate conditions around food supply and distribution to those who need it in our community.

Other considerations around your program

Retail donations: We have seen retail donations decrease in all of our 10 counties. The drops are as much as 40-70% lower than normal donation amounts. As families are purchasing more products to stockpile at their homes, the retail stores have fewer products to donate. We want to reassure you that the Feeding Tampa Bay team has already actively reached out to multiple sources to acquire excess product – especially from venues and partners that have cancelled large events and may be left with unused food. We will keep you updated on concerns or changes in food donations. For those of you who pick up directly from stores, please be aware of decreases in donations and communicate with us if you are in need of additional food and supplies. If you will not be able to complete retail pickups, please alert us to your closure via the agency status survey.

Client-choice: Feeding Tampa Bay has changed to a client-choice model in all of our distributions to heighten the dignity and respect we give everyone we serve. While this remains a priority to give families a choice of what foods they take with them, now is the time when we want to minimize extra touching of product. We recommend having volunteers pre-pack boxes or bags of food so that only one exchange is needed to serve your clients.

Growing numbers: In anticipation of school and company closures, it would be wise for all of us to expect a larger need in our community. If families find themselves out of work without pay, they will likely turn to you for help when they normally wouldn’t be. The same is true for children who could be lacking meals at school because of closures. Please be planning for how your program would and could respond to a potential growing need and communicate with the Feeding Tampa Bay team if you need additional support.
