On our headstones will be the etching of when we were born and when we died. What matters is the dash between dates. That little dash. That’s our life. That represents the short time we have to make a difference, or not. When you give your time as a volunteer what you do during that dash is significant. Your kindness, concern and caring interactions make a powerful difference. You may never know the profound effect that you may have made on a person’s life. A kind word, a warm welcome, a gentle touch or a listening ear can mean so much to someone who is hungry, struggling, in pain or lonely. You can make another person's life a bit more bearable because you have taken the time to care and to listen. We hear a lot of talk about random acts of kindness; well volunteering is not random at all. It is deliberate, intentional, and gives great meaning to that little "dash" of our lives.
